Hydroseeder and Hydromulcher: Bonded Fiber Matrix Turf Seeding Equipment

First Time Buyers

Know the differences in features between types of hydroseeder and hydromulcher equipment before spending thousands. A superior hydroseeder can quickly mix and apply any kind of mulch mixture, whether thick or thin. A thick mulch mixture is normally needed for serious erosion control. However, at times a highway right of way can be adequately covered with a thin mixture. Landscaping for sod quality results requires hydromulching with premium mulch products which are best handled by high-end equipment such as TurfSeeder hydroseeders.

Don’t be misled into thinking that a bigger tank or engine is the answer. A re-circulation or jet agitation machine cannot handle even moderately thick mixtures, limiting your applications to low budget projects. There is absolutely no substitute for equipment designed to expertly mix and pump high quality mulch materials at optimum rates. Deciding to purchase cheap hydroseeding equipment can result in disaster for a new contractor trying to enter the business of seeding & growing top-quality grass on new lawns and fine landscapes or for serious erosion control.

TurfSeeder Features & Design Differences Improve Productivity

  • DIRECT DRIVE MECHANICAL AGITATION - Load and combine the thickest wood mulch mixtures almost instantly.  No time wasted in reversing the agitator for complete mixing.
  • ROTARY GEAR PUMP - Capable of pumping very thick mixtures through a long hose without pressure loss at hose end.  A TurfSeeder is THE BEST MACHINE to use when pumping with 500' of hose up a hillside.
  • LOW-PROFILE LOADING PLATFORMS - This design element minimizes user fatigue caused by lifting heavy bags of mulch onto high loading platforms.
  • CLEAR WATER FLUSH SYSTEM - This system design feature pumps clear water through the hose, pushing the heavy mulch out.  The hose is fully drained, resulting in the hose becoming very lightweight making it much easier to handle and store.
  • DOUBLE CAPACITY - A TurfSeeder can fill itself from an auxiliary water tank, massively increasing capacity by greatly reducing the number of trips to the water source.  This is particularly important when a high volume water source is not conveniently close by.  If a garden hose is the only nearby water source, an auxiliary water tank can be filling while spraying continues uninterrupted.
  • CONTROLLED PRESSURE - The pressure control is independent of the engine speed as well as from the agitator speed.  This permits the user at the end of a long hose to accurately spray around flower beds with low-pressure or spray the mulch mixture as far away as 100’ from hose-end with high pressure.
  • SIMPLE, ROBUST DESIGN - There is no clutch and no hydraulic system to fail, only tensioned v-belts which function similarly to many riding lawn mowers.  Yet the pump, pump pressure as well as agitator are all controlled independently of each other.
  • SUPERIOR FIRST IMPRESSION - When an experienced or even inexperienced person uses a TurfSeeder for the first time, they are invariably impressed and even amazed at how such a simple machine can perform at such a superior level, but which in most cases costs less than similar machines.

CONSIDERATIONS:

GEAR  VS. CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

A TurfSeeder gear pump is by far the best choice for thick mulch mixtures. A centrifugal pump will pump thinner mixtures, assuming adequate horsepower.. Either pump will provide good service for lighter hydromulching operations but only a gear pump will offer superior performance for the serious stuff.

MECHANICAL AGITATION VS. JET AGITATION

Thin Mixtures are needed on dry or sandy soils. Jet agitation hydroseeders can only make thin mixtures. They are slow, but jet agitation hydroseeding machines can spray a thin mix of paper mulch onto loose soil and produce a fairly nice lawn some of the time. However, imagine what a TurfSeeder with mechanical agitation can do with thin mixtures.

Thick Mixtures are required on hard soils and/or wet soils. A thin mix will run when applied to hard or wet soil. Insufficient mulch applications are an invitation to washouts and inferior germination problems. It is basically impossible to make thick mixtures with jet agitation machines. The handling of thick mixtures is easy with mechanical agitation. Mechanical agitation is a standard feature on all TurfSeeder machines.

Wood Fiber Mulch is commonly demanded by landscape architects as well as government agencies. It is improper to use 100% wood mulch in any jet agitation hydroseeding machine as it will clog. Wood fiber mulch is handled easily by a TurfSeeder.

Bonded Fiber Matrix is a special wood mulch product that requires a thicker mix & application as compared to regular wood mulch. These kinds of products cannot be used in a jet agitation hydroseeder per manufacturer requirements. Think TurfSeeder!

Hydro Sprigging has become more widespread in planting grasses with significantly lower cost as compared to laying sod.  Technology is emerging that allows hydro sprigging to be a very reliable method of planting new grass. In fact, some grasses can now be planted using live pieces of grass in place of seed in the tank of a TurfSeeder.

A TurfSeeder with mechanical agitation can apply thin mixtures, thick mixtures, wood fiber mulch, bonded fiber matrix products and even perform hydro sprigging.  In short it does it all.

There are no limitations with a TurfSeeder hydroseeder!
